Description
I have noticed cars flying down the hill on Montecito despite there being a school on the corner and senior living across from it. People even blow past the stop signs on Bay Pl. quite often. I frequent the area for grocery shopping and have been doing so for almost 10 years now.
This reckless driving with little regard for the safety of Oakland’s children and elderly needs to be checked. It should become widely known that tickets are frequently handed out in this area. Police should periodically sit on Montecito, on Bay, or on the corner of Park View Terrace, Lenox Ave., or Lee St. and Montecito handing out tickets.
I recently returned from a visit to Brooklyn, NY and observed (as a native of that city) how traffic cameras and posted signs have completely changed the driving habits on one of the heaviest travel stretches in the city (Linden Blvd.) by reinforcing a 25 mile per hour city speed limit. It was evident to me, a 40+ year native of that city who has frequented that road as both a passenger and driver for three decades, that the city was scared straight to take the speed limit seriously.
Oakland needs to do more to protect its citizens. I witness this level of compliance and reinforcement in errant cities like Walnut Creek, Orinda, and Lafayette. Why not in Oakland?!
