I live on Kaydeross Ave West. Anytime I have to turn south on Rte 9 from my street, I pray for safety. The southbound traffic comes around that blind uphill curvea t a rate which makes it impossibke for them to stop in time even if they do see something. The median there is too narrow for protection. When I return from town and must turn left across the northbound lanes, generally I must wait to allow the northbound traffic to dissipate. My car literally rocks from the southbound autos blowing by me at speeds in the 70s. Please, can the police department restore some order in this stretch?

additionally, the speed should be reduced to 45 in that corridor all the way to the exit 13 interchange, rumble strips created on the shoulders, and a light and crosswalk at kaydeross ave and route 9 intersection. no one should die from crossing the street, and it is inevitible because of the hotels there and restaurants. saratoga wants to be more bicycle user friendly, the scope should envelop this corridor. please, no more people should have to die on this road with a few more safety measures.

From Malta Avenue Extension to the state park should be 40 or 45 at the most

The speed limit is not the problem. The issue has been people being drunk(driver or pedestrian), wearing dark clothes at night or in the rain in almost all the accidents involving pedestrians. Would the people be less dead if they were hit by a car going 45 mph? The businesses want a lower limit because it would benefit them financially, and bottom line thtra is what matters to them. If we change laws to protect stupid people we will never get anywhere or get anything done.

I believe DOT must monitor traffic speeds before lowering a speed limit. This road is designed for 55 MPH. If DOT lowers this limit, even if most cars are doing 55, then they must also do that in other areas such as Clinton Street from Daniels Road to Skidmore.

I agree that Speed is not the issue, pedestrians wearing dark clothes at night on a state highway is a problem, not the speed.

the speed limit benefits the drivers reaction time. a combination of small changes would significantly improve safety in this corridor. i don't think it is stupid to want to feel safe driving in this area, or if i were a visitor staying at one of the hotels, enjoying a concert, or a meal. the area is zoned for business, not solely as a highway. i guess i don't understand the negativity toward making a mixed use area safer for traffic, drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. i can recall at east one death where the pedestrian and driver were not drinking. how forever changed are these drivers lives, and the fataly injured person's family? i cannot even fathom it! i used to be a food business owner located on a state highway, and the town had the sense enough to keep the speed limit low. i would be mortified if someone where to die coming to or from my previous establishment, and the guilt would be heartwrenching. i don't think someone should die because they didn't have the means for transportation, made a decision to walk back to the hotel from a concert instead of driving drunk, or wanted to cross the road and walk to get dinner instead of getting in the car to drive 50 feet.

I drive this stretch nearly every night, and agree that it's dangerous. I don't know that the speed limit needs to be changed necessarily, but better visibility and more warning that there are potentially pedestrians in the area would help those who aren't familiar with the stretch make a more informed decision about their speed and level of attentiveness. Personally, I tend to drive right around 50 miles per hour through that section, and I am always looking for pedestrians and animals.
Let's face it, just about all of us relax quite a bit when we know that we are on a highway and there is unlikely to be anything impeding our progress. How many people drive 65 miles per hour or less on the Northway?
If we warn drivers that there may be pedestrians crossing, maybe put in a crosswalk or two with traffic signals, and increase the lighting in the area, most drivers will be responsible about their own speed and will be more alert for pedestrians crossing in front of them.
