The owners of this property were given the form to remove the exemption in 2022 if they did submit it it would not be taken off until the new tax year so if it is still showing a exemption in 2024 we will follow up with them

This is not a code violation it is a tax issue this is closed

I just spoke with the Lake County Auditor's office about this issue. I was told that I should go through code enforcement to report this issue. I told her that I did and was told that it was not a code violation. She was very surprised by your answer. I did find out that the owners did NOT file the paperwork to removed both the Homestead deduction and the Supplemental Standard deduction form #54890 and that those deductions are still showing up. According to my calculations, the loss in tax revenue on this property alone is approximately $1,900.00/year. I will be contacting the supervisor in the Auditor's office on Monday to follow up with today's conversation.

The rentals in Hammond have gotten out of hand. There needs to be a limit on the number of rentals allowed in a certain area of the city. If someone wants to rent their home, they should have to apply for a permit allowing them to rent.If none are available then they will either have to sell or sit on the property until a permit is available. Large amount of rentals = deterioration of neighborhoods.

Actually, any rental property in Hammond is required to have a yearly ‘occupancy permit’ which is applied for through the city and needs to be prominently displayed on the house/apartment.

Given that this property has been officially registered for the year 2023, does the city proactively utilize this information to verify whether homeowners are benefiting from the Homestead & Supplemental deductions on their property taxes? If not, it raises the question of why such an opportunity is being missed, resulting in a loss of tax revenue for the city of Hammond. It appears to be in the city's best interest to take action concerning the registration of rental properties within the county. Ideally, concerned citizens should not find themselves in the position of having to handle these matters independently. There appears to be a need for improved communication and accountability between the city and the county in this regard.

I totally agree. Rentals are getting out of hand.

There are 8 rental properties on the 2100 block of Davis alone out of 28 homes. Who knows if that's an accurate figure since most people who rent out their properties do not follow code and notify the city or county.

There’s rental properties everywhere, Whiting isn’t an exception. Theres only going to be more rentals so get used to it ;)
