Why do people think its ok to take their animals shopping when really hot outside and leave them in a hot car. How would you like it if someone left you in a hot car with all the windows closed?
Agreed. Even with the windows open a couple inches it can still get lethally hot inside a car. In my old city, this was illegal, and you could lawfully break a car window to free any dog trapped inside the car if it was over a certain temperature. Is this not the case in PA?
I think people need to understand if they are going shopping for a long period of time
dont bring your pet! they dont want to be stuck in a car!
and if you stop for a short time, LEAVE THE A/C RUNNING!! Even a few minutes in a hot vehicle can kill a dog, and the windows being "cracked" does nothing! I cant even sit in a vehicle on a hot day with just the windows "cracked". How would a dog be able to handle that?!

Even for 10 min a car can become a death trap, even on a mild sunny day. So if its 32C outside, it can raise the car's inside temperature to well above 43C. Never, ever leave your pet inside the car. If your pet can't come with you when you get out of the car, leave him at home. I found this info on The Weather Channel website from the US but I converted the temperatures to Celsius. Its a must read for all the pet owners out there.
More places should let you bring in your pet. What are you supposed to do, let them run free outside!? It's the businesses that are at fault here, not the poor consumers!
I do not blame business for not wanting dogs in their stores. Of course you aren't going to let your dog run free outside. That's why you leave it at home! Your dog will not die from loneliness in the hour or so you are gone running your errands. It MIGHT die from heat stroke if left in your car. The answer seems obvious to me here: Leave your dog home when you go shopping!
The Voice O Reason why should a business be responsable for irresponsable dog owners? If you own a dog it's your responsability not anyone elses and if you leave it in a car on a hot day then you are not a very responsable dog owner. No way you can blame anyone else for that! If your going shopping leave your pet at home.
What if you're on your way home from the doggie daycare, and you have an emergency? What if you're driving around with your dog, and you suddenly realize you forgot something? What if your dog is in the car, and your child suddenly has to go to the bathroom? There's many reasons why you could need to enter a business while you have your dog in the car that can't be foreseen when you leave your house. Putting the blame on the consumers is a way to lazily avoid the root of the problem, which is that dogs aren't allowed in businesses. The fact that they're being left in cars is in direct result of the original problem.
We need to change our way of thinking here. Besides, nearly every business in town would allow a seeing eye dog through its doors, why should able-bodied people be punished? Make the pet owner responsible for any damage the pet causes, and allow them in the store. That would solve this problem without relying on the city to issue a bunch of tickets.
Voice of reason the dog owner is responsible for the well being and safety of his/her pet, not the bessness owner nor anyone else. If someone is not being a responsible pet owner it is not any one else's fault or responsibility. So please don' t expect others to do so. Plan your day properly and put your priorities right and you will never have a reason to leave your dog alone, locked up, and suffering in a car.
What about emergencies, though? Have you ever had anything happen to you during your day that you could not plan for? There is absolutely no way that anybody could reasonably be expected to plan for every event that could possibly happen when they leave their house--to expect them to is to be completely unreasonable.
You've completely ignored my response that if dogs would be allowed in businesses, then we'd never have to leave another pet in a car again. We have to think outside the box here, TJ. Every business in town will allow a seeing eye dog inside, why not allow all dogs inside the business and make the pet owner responsible for the damages? Under this ruling, there is no situation where a dog would have to be left in a car, regardless of whatever unexpected emergency may occur.
Now your just grasping at straws here. As I stated "the dog owner is responsible for the well being and safety of his/her pet." Not business owners or anyone else. You own the animal so you need to take responsability for that animals well being. If you have to go shopping, and shopping is not an emergancy, then leave your pet at home or take the pet home and then go shopping.
How am I grasping at straws? You are the one who is looking only at one possibility, and ignoring anything else that could happen. Yes, if somebody is planning on going shopping, they should not bring their dog. I am in agreement with you there. However, there are lots of scenarios in which something could happen which could not be foreseen. This is not grasping at straws, this is stating a fact. Nobody has the foresight to be able to predict every possible outcome of every possible activity.
You've also continued to ignore the point I am trying to make. We could eliminate the need entirely for a dog to ever be left in a car by allowing them inside businesses. How much sense does it make that I am allowed to bring my dog into a gas station if I am blind, but not if I have full sight? It's sad that the answer is right in front of our eyes, and yet some in society, as shown by the comments on this page, remain much too obtuse to even acknowledge it.

Voice of Reason, you mention that service dogs are allowe\d into shops that otherwise wouldn't allow dogs. Service dogs are trained to behave themselves. The average pet is not. You're saying that a dog owner *has* to take the dog with them into a shop? I don't think so. They could park in the shade. That would help. I fail to see, however, how you can have an emergency that requires a person to be at the Cornerstone or Gateway Malls and have their dog with them. While I suppose it's a possibility, the sad fact is that most of the dogs left in the car aren't trained to behave themselves when the owners aren't home. That *still* remains the responsibility of the owners, not the business community.
Easy, just make the pet owner responsible for any damage the misbehaving pet commits. I'd say there are a number of children that aren't trained to behave themselves (I once saw a child run up and bite a stranger in the back of the thigh at a large department store in Cornerstone), but I don't see any shops in town that have signs up that say "No Kids."
And parking in the shade would definitely help, but I'm not sure if people would see it an enough. For the others posting in this thread: if a dog were locked in a car, and the car were parked in the shade, would you be okay with it?
