There is a serious issue with garbage in Troy. I am a recent resident who relocated to Troy and I have never experienced anything like it. I come from one of the largest and most inhabited city in the world and I am shocked by the amount of stray garbage all over this city. All it would take would be to put a few garbage cans on a regular pattern across the city. I would like to start by putting one at the Bus Stop at the corner of Adams and 3rd where inconsiderate folks tend to leave garbage without a concern in the world. Lets please all work together to clean the streets of Troy! ---this issue has never been fixed and I am now moving, so nice to see the hard work fixing up the town! Later!

I doubt that trash cans will help. It's the welfare scumbags that are so prevelant in troy. They think nothing of just throwing trash on the street without a second thought of who might be watching. They're accustomed to having people do everything for them... picking up their trash is just a small part of that.
I was standing on the front porch of my apt building and this welfare scum walked by unwrapping a pastry. He didn't even give a thought to simply letting thr wrapper fall on the sidewalk in front of my building. I asked him politely to pick it up and place it in the trash can 10 feet away. His friend got all confrontational and couldn't believe that I had the gall to tell them not to litter.
The trash everywhere is just how Troy is. Get used to it. All we can do as civilized people is to pick up after these welfare queens when they drop trash near our homes. If you see them doing it... confront them. Make them accountable for their actions.
The police could help by issuing tickets for littering. They have to see it happeneing all day and night when they'r eon patrol.

Hi Greg,
I have placed a request with Troy's Department of Public Works to have a trash receptacle placed at that bus stop. I agree with you that there is a garbage problem in certain parts of the city. While I'm not certain that placing garbage cans throughout the city will solve the problem or change inconsiderate people's behaviors, it definitely eliminates the excuse of not having a place to throw away the garbage.

Billie-Jean, thank you for pointing Greg in the right direction.
Also, for city issues, it's best to contact me at zalewski@troycitycouncil.com.
Greg, feel free to e-mail me to brainstorm on ideas to cut down on the garbage problem.

Sam, I'd rather not blame a particular group, especially since I'm not quite sure how you identify a "welfare scumbag". Do these individuals have signs on them that make it clear?
I also don't think it's productive to say that the trash is "just how Troy is. Get used to it." The time it took you to write that could have been time spent on developing a plan for addressing the issue. The City cannot monitor every street every second of the day.
It's up to residents to take pride in their neighborhoods and build the type of community that makes it embarrassing and shameful to litter. The city must be a partner in that effort.
I'm not giving up hope, and you should not either. It only becomes "just how Troy is" if we do not use our energy and creativity to change things.

It's easy to identify the welfare scumbags. They're the people you see hanging out on a stoop, walking (or riding a bicycle) around on weekdays between 9 am and 5pm (when everyone else is working) carelessly dropping trash wherever they feel like.
I wonder what % of Troys population is receiving some form of government assistance. I bet it's far greater than other nearby cities. How can we find out?
The only way to make them stop littering is for the police to start issuing tickets with fines. Asking them to stop won't work. This class of people do not feel shame or get embarrassed. They're entitled afterall!
